Radha’s mother-in-law pays for the wedding of Radha and Shamu (Raaj Kumar) by borrowing money from the moneylender Sukhilala (Kanhaiyalal). The terms of the loan are contested, but the village elders rule in the moneylender’s favor; as a result, Shamu and Radha are required to pay interest on the loan of 500 rupees, which was equivalent to around 105 US dollars in 1957, equal to three-quarters of their crop. Shamu’s arms are broken by a boulder as he labors to utilize more of their rocky terrain.

Shamu thinks he is of no value to his family and permanently abandons Radha and their three sons, walking to his own likely starved death. Shamu is ashamed of his helplessness (having no arms) and embarrassed by Sukhilala for surviving on the earnings of his wife.

Soon later, both Radha’s mother-in-law and her youngest son passed away. Homes in the village are destroyed by a violent storm, and the ensuing flood destroys the harvest. If Radha trades her body to Sukhilala for food, he will save Radha and her sons.

Although Radha violently rejects his offer, she also loses her child (her fourth son) to the storm’s terrible effects. Despite initially starting to leave the community, the people opt to stay and restore it.

After some time passes, Birju (Sunil Dutt) and Ramu (Rajendra Kumar), Radha’s two surviving children, are now young men. Birju, who has been resentful of Sukhilala’s demands since he was a young child, vents his resentment by harassing the village girls, particularly Sukhilala’s daughter Rupa.

Ramu, in contrast, has a more composed disposition and marries shortly after. When Birju’s rage reaches a hazardous level, he attacks Sukhilala and his daughter, attacks Radha, and takes Radha’s Kangan (marriage bracelets), which were pawned with Sukhilala.
