The polemical book by American novelist Katherine Mayo with the same name, published in 1927, in which she criticized Indian society, religion, and culture, served as the inspiration for the moniker Mother India.
Written in opposition to Indian calls for self-government and independence from British authority, the book made note of how women, untouchables, animals, and filth were treated in India as well as the behavior of its nationalistic politicians.
As the root of all issues, Mayo singled out what she believed to be the male gender’s pervasive and terminally weakening sexuality, which she claimed was responsible for masturbation, rape, homosexuality, prostitution, venereal illnesses, and, crucially, early sexual activity and pregnancy.
