Sindhi Classical Music Singer Muhammad Yousuf Biography 

Muhammad Yousuf was born on January 20, 1940, in Hyderabad Sindh, Pakistan, at Muhalla Din Ali Shah, Tiyoon Number Talau, and Tando Tayeb Hyderabad. His father Laung Faqir Maganhar played the Sharnai (or Shahnai) and beat the Dholak Nawaz (drums). When Radio Pakistan Hyderabad played Dholak, his father used to perform.

He went to Haji Seth Kamaluddin School and Baar Sudhar School in Hyderabad. But despite passing five classes, he decided that formal schooling was not for him and quit. He became a member of Bibo Khan’s musical group. His father then instructed him to visit renowned singer Ustad Manzoor Ali Khan at Tando Adam Khan. He spent almost thirteen years studying with him. At the age of 57, this great master of Sindhi Classical Music passed away on February 14, 1997.

The Early Life and Career of Ustad Muhammad Yousuf

He began singing in Sindhi films as a playback vocalist after finding early success at Radio Pakistan.  Sindhi Film “Shehro Feroz” which was released on October 18, 1968, from Karachi, served as his debut film as a playback vocalist.  Shaikh Hassan directed this movie, and Ghulam Ali composed the soundtrack.

He became well-known in the cinema industry thanks to his first playback lyric, “Rahat Milay Thi Dard Men, Man Piyar Tan Sadqay.” Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he continued to perform as a playback vocalist in practically all Sindhi films. He sang as a playback vocalist alongside many well-known artists, including Madam Noor Jahan, Abida Parveen, Runa Laila, and others.

A singing contest for amateurs was held in 1951 at Liaquat Medical College in Jamshoro (now Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences). The event’s main guest was Provincial Minister Ali Muhammad Rashidi. Muhammad Yousuf not only took part in the tournament, but he also placed first and received a lot of praise and support. At Radio Pakistan Karachi, he then began to sing. He relocated from Karachi to Hyderabad, his hometown, following the founding of Radio Pakistan Hyderabad in 1955.
