Runa Laila was born on 17 November 1952 in Sylhet, East Bengal, she got early music training from Ustad Qader. Runa Laila moved to Karachi, Pakistan and she was the most popular singer in Pakistan in the tenure of 1960 to 1970, after 1974.

Laila was born in Sylhet to Amina Laila and Syed Mohammed Imdad Ali, a government employee assigned to Karachi. She began studying Kathak and Bharatanatyam, dance classes. At the time, rock ‘n’ roll, disco, and other contemporary musical genres were introduced to South Asian music by Ahmed Rushdi, a prominent cinema singer.
As a result of Rushdi’s popularity, Christian jazz bands began playing in nightclubs and hotel lobbies[8] in Karachi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Dhaka, and Lahore. Laila developed a love for the singer Ahmed Rushdi, whom she saw as her guru (master), and she tried to imitate both his singing technique and his stage presence.
Together with her older sister Dina Laila, she then studied classical music (d. 1976). She took first place in an inter-school singing competition in Karachi, which was then West Pakistan, while she was a Saint Lawrence Convent student.
