Music used to be in his blood, together with his father, Ustad Azeem Khan, and uncle, Ustad Ismail Khan, being traditional Dhrupad singers. This rich musical heritage shaped Mehdi’s early years.

Mehdi Hassan started his formal music training at the tender age of 8 under his father and uncle’s tutelage. Through the age of 18, he had mastered classical forms such as Dhrupad, Dadra, Thumri, and Khayal. This rigorous basis supplied him with the versatility and depth that later defined his ghazal singing. In 1952, Mehdi Hassan debuted on Radio Pakistan, performing classical Thumris.
